I ask why vested interests are allowed to perpetuate our thirst for foreign fuels, while great reservoirs of liquid and gaseous fossil fuels exist within our own boundaries. These fuels are poised to be carefully extracted in order to fill the tanks of modern industry and domestic usage. Are energy czars hoarding so to wait for a time when these domestic vats of hydrocarbon wealth are of greater financial or strategic import? Possibly!
Or, is the present United States administration attempting to massage and milk the depths of Middle East oil wells, and the shores of nations such as Brazil, until these nations deplete this major source of prosperity. In such way, does this nation hope to command greater influence and position on the future world fuel stage? Less likely... but possibly!
But, in all this stands a yet greater deceptive slight of hand. Touting their efficiency, our present government pushes the cause of the electric car, while ignoring that the primary source for our electricity is yet found in fossil fuels. A short stopgap is surely offered by this profoundly efficient vehicular technology, but it will work only if the fleet can be maintained and electricity is cheap. Given the drive for clean coal and recent nervousness about nuclear power sources, a cheapening of electricity in not within my energy forecast.
The arrival of sure fuel independence is not to be found in fossil fuels or electric vehicles. I yet maintain that the secure energy for our future lies in the development of hydrogen-burning combustion engines for our vehicles. Though when developed, our present, domestic, vast reservoirs of shale oil and natural gas can sustain us through the near future, we must not lose long term impetus for the development of economical hydrogen production, transport, and storage. I pray that the eyes of energy czars soon focus on this future fuel, at least before I reach the bottom of my senior citizen coin purse.
